Hip Pain Q & A

What causes hip pain?

Although the majority of people who suffer from hip pain are 65 years or older, people of any age can also have it. Common causes of hip pain include:

  • Obesity
  • Sports injuries
  • Sciatica
  • Arthritis
  • Bursitis
  • Lower back injury
  • Falls

The most effective treatment plan depends in large part on the cause of your hip pain. The course of treatment for a person who has pain due to osteoarthritis will be much different than the treatment for a person with bursitis, for example.

Can chiropractic adjustments relieve hip pain?

Depending on the cause of your hip pain, chiropractic adjustments can be the best treatment option. When hip pain is actually the result of a lower back issue, chiropractic adjustments may be the best method for recovery as well.

Another common cause of hip pain is sciatica. The sciatic nerve is a large nerve at the base of the spine. When it is irritated or compressed, constant pain in one side of the buttock and one leg, weakness, and numbness results. Sciatica is the collective name for that pain. Chiropractic adjustments are often a successful treatment for sciatica.

Some osteoarthritis patients with hip pain benefit from chiropractic adjustments. The Arthritis Foundation suggests that chiropractic care is appropriate to maximize the function of joints damaged by the disease.

How does physical therapy or rehabilitation improve hip pain?

All patients who have hip replacement surgery are referred to physical therapy, but it can be useful for resolving other hip problems as well. Strengthening and increasing the flexibility of the muscles surrounding the hip can reduce pain in multiple situations.

Dr. Walker and the team develop an individual care plan for you, and you may be asked to complete exercises at home. As your strength, endurance, and flexibility increase, he updates your plan so that improvement continues.
